課程概述 |
This course is the second part of my course in German Literature that I have scheduled for one year.
It offers the study of a variety of German literary works that are relevant to today's educated people and experts alike. Though we usually can only read texts that have been written since 1750, we want to go beyond this era and take a few glances on the Middle High German Poets as well, since this is a usually neglected domain because of the difficulties students may have with the Middle High German language. Even so, we can say that the literary creations of that era are strong in the sense of imagination we can see in them as well as through their formal excellence and expressively character. So, any study of such works will be highly interesting. Translations will be handed out. The center of this semester's teaching should be our WEIMAR CLASSICAL period and ROMANTICISM. This year, I will much focus on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller, but also on Heinrich von Kleist, Johann Gottfried Herder and Jean Paul. As the 20th Century has many a famous authors in Germany and Austria, I will also read and discuss at least two of them.
Sessions: Usually three hours one single day of the week; if the literary work turns out to be too long or, as it sometimes happens, to be difficult, we will extend the lecture (and explanation time and discussion, of course) to up to three weeks. This is necessary since this course is, from a linguistic viewpoint, an advanced training course that should enable students to read literary texts independently. All occurring difficulties of the language have to be mastered.
All texts will be provided by the teacher of the course. There will be a mid-term and a final exam determining the final grade.
